Ingredients
- 4 Scheiben Cuban bread (or similar baguette)
- 60g Unsalted butter, softened
- nach Geschmack Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Carefully slice the Cuban bread lengthwise, ensuring the cut surfaces are as smooth as possible. Then, cut the halves into manageable pieces, approximately 15 cm (6 inches) long. This size is ideal for toast and makes handling easier during the next steps. This preparation ensures the perfect base for your Tostada Cubana.
- Now, generously and evenly spread the softened butter on the cut surfaces of the bread. Ensure every part is well-covered, as the butter contributes not only to the flavor but also to the crispy texture. A thick layer of butter also prevents the bread from drying out, which is crucial for an authentic and enjoyable experience.
- Preheat a heavy skillet, ideally cast iron for best results, or a sandwich press over medium heat. The optimal temperature is reached when a small drop of water evaporates instantly in the pan. Too high heat will burn the butter, while too low heat will not properly brown the bread. Wait approximately 2–3 minutes for the perfect starting temperature.
- Place the bread, butter-side down, into the preheated skillet or sandwich press. To achieve the classic tostada shape, immediately press the bread down with a second pot, a spatula, or a specific toast press. Ensure the pressure is even to guarantee a flat, crispy surface and to optimally develop the flavors. This step is essential for the perfect texture.
- Now, toast the bread for approximately 3-5 minutes per side until it develops a beautiful golden-brown color and becomes wonderfully crispy. Carefully flip the bread to ensure both sides brown evenly. Be careful not to let it get too dark, as this can affect the flavor. The golden-brown crust is your visual indicator of perfection here.
- Serve the freshly prepared Cuban toasts immediately while they are still warm and crispy. For the final touch, you can optionally sprinkle a pinch of fine salt over them, which intensifies the natural flavors of the bread and butter. Enjoy this simple yet delicious snack as a side or on its own.
