Ingredients
- 200g Yellow split peas (Masoor Dal), soaked overnight
- 50g Rice flour
- 1/2 Onion, small, finely chopped
- 2 Zehen Garlic, minced
- 1 Green chili, minced (optional)
- 1 TL Cumin, ground
- 1/2 TL Turmeric, ground
- 1/2 TL Baking powder
- 1 EL Fresh cilantro, chopped
- 1/2 TL Salt
- 500ml Vegetable oil (for frying)
- Optional Optional: Hot sauce or chutney for serving
Instructions
- Drain and rinse the soaked split peas well. Blend in a food processor with a minimal amount of water (just enough to form a coarse paste).
- Transfer the lentil paste to a large bowl. Add rice flour, chopped onion, garlic, green chili (if using), cumin, turmeric, baking powder, cilantro, and salt. Mix well to form a sticky dough.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or fryer to 170-180°C (340-350°F).
- Lightly wet your hands. Take small portions of the dough (about the size of a golf ball) and shape them into flat, round discs with a hole in the center, similar to a donut.
- Carefully slide the bara into the hot oil. Fry in batches until golden brown and cooked through (about 3-5 minutes per side).
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Serve hot with hot sauce or chutney.
