Instructions

  1. For the pastry, combine flour and salt in a large bowl. Add cold butter cubes and cut in with your fingers or a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Gradually add ice water, mixing until a dough forms. Do not overmix. Shape the dough into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  3. For the filling, combine grated coconut, brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and lime juice in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar has melted and the mixture has slightly thickened (about 5-7 minutes). Remove from heat and let cool.
  4. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough thinly. Cut out circles (about 10 cm / 4 inches in diameter) using a round cutter or glass.
  6. Place a tablespoon of the coconut filling in the center of each pastry circle. Fold the edges of the dough inwards and pinch them together to form a small open cup holding the filling.
  7. Place the gizzadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the filling is caramelized.
  9. Let cool on a wire rack before serving.
